Answer
Preparing oneself for marriage biblically is akin to preparing for any life endeavor. There is a principle that should govern all aspects of our lives as born-again believers: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” «Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. », (Matthew 22:37). This is not a casual command. It is the focal point of our lives as believers. It is choosing to focus on God and His Word with our whole heart so that our soul and mind are engaged with the things that will please Him.
The relationship we have with God through the Lord Jesus Christ is what provides perspective to all other relationships. The marriage relationship is founded on the model of Christ and His church (Ephesians 5:22-33). Every aspect of our lives is guided by our commitment as believers to live according to the commandments and precepts of the Lord. Our obedience to God and His Word enables us to fulfill our God-given roles in marriage and in the world. And the duty of every born-again believer is to glorify God in all things «Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. », (1 Corinthians 10:31).
To prepare yourself for marriage, to walk worthy of your calling in Christ Jesus, and to become intimate with God through His Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17), focus on obedience in all things. There is no simple plan to learn to walk in obedience to God. It is a choice we must make every day.To set aside worldly perspectives and follow God instead is to walk in a manner worthy of Christ. It involves humbly submitting ourselves to the only Way, the only Truth, and the only Life on a daily, moment-by-moment basis. This is the essential preparation every believer requires to be prepared for the wonderful gift we know as marriage.
A spiritually mature individual who walks closely with God is better equipped for marriage than anyone else. Marriage necessitates commitment, passion, humility, love, and respect. These qualities are most apparent in someone who shares an intimate bond with God. As you ready yourself for marriage, concentrate on allowing God to shape and mold you into the person He intends you to be (Romans 12:1-2). By surrendering to Him, He will empower you to be prepared for marriage when that special day arrives.
