Did Moses exist?

Answer

The concept of Moses being a historical figure is closely linked to the credibility of the Bible. Both the Old and New Testaments depict him as a real person; he even makes an appearance during the transfiguration of Christ. The substantial evidence supporting the accuracy of the Bible also indicates that Moses indeed existed.

Efforts to question the existence of Moses typically begin with a rejection of the Bible. This perspective assumes that the accounts in the Old Testament are entirely fictional or were significantly altered to invent the character of Moses. Those who argue that there are no ancient records explicitly mentioning Moses often add a disclaimer, stating “other than the Bible,” implying that Scripture is inherently an unreliable source of information. Critics generally acknowledge the likelihood of a figure similar to Moses, as completely denying his existence contradicts both historical records and archaeological findings.

Although Moses is not specifically documented in Egyptian historical records, archaeologists point out that Egyptian historians were known for being inconsistent and often omitted unfavorable information about their Pharaohs. It is not surprising that Egypt’s official records do not reference a former slave who returned after forty years in the wilderness to bring calamity upon their nation.

Furthermore, there is archaeological proof supporting the events of the Exodus. This evidence includes the Ipuwer Papyrus, which describes plagues like famine, blood, fire, and insects. Discoveries in a settlement named Kahun reveal a significant slave population and signs of a sudden departure. Evidence related to the Pharaohs and the era’s occurrences also align with the biblical narrative.

Requesting additional evidence to confirm Moses’ existence would be unreasonable and surpass the standard applied to other prominent historical figures. It is particularly illogical to expect firsthand evidence for a figure who lived in a time long past.Survive from over thirty centuries ago. The fact that we have evidence of an individual like Moses is remarkable. As the evidence corroborates the events recounted in Exodus, specifically, and the Bible overall, there is ample justification to consider Moses as an actual historical figure.
