Hit in the face with a fire extinguisher

According to reports, attackers abused the young woman and then beat her with a fire extinguisher.

The security officer had come to collect the keys to the church when he was told that someone was already in the church. She came to church only to find Uwaila in a pool of blood and next to her was the fire extinguisher that was used to hit her in the face.

He ran back to report to the key keeper and his wife, who went to church to meet her dead, thinking she was dead.

After careful observation, they noticed that she moved her hand and quickly took her to the hospital. It was in the hospital that Uwaila revealed that she was reading alone when unknown men entered the church; they raped and hit his head with a fire extinguisher. However, she passed away later.

The case was eventually reported to the Oregbeni Police Station, but nothing has been done about it so far. Her friends and family have now turned to social media to demand action, using the hashtag #JusticeForUwa.

«The IGP, while condemning the attack, commiserates with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. He calls for calm and assures that the Force will surely bring the perpetrators of the callous act to book in the shortest possible time,» reads a Nigerian Police post on its Twitter account. The case remains under investigation.

Outrage and protests in the country

Meanwhile, the event sparked a wave of reactions and protests in the country. Edo state governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki ordered “a thorough investigation into the case to ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.”

This Monday, several people protested near the police headquarters in Benin City, demanding justice. Also, #JusticeforUwa became a trend in social networks.

In this context, Osai Ojigho, the director for Amnesty International in Nigeria, told The Guardian that Omozuwa’s death “resonates because even in the spaces that women and girls should be safest from gender-based violence, the home, the schools and now places of worship, it is getting there.”

In her opinion, the country’s authorities did not do enough to end this type of crime. “The method the state has been using over the years, clearly has not moved with the intensity required to deter rapists and potential rapists and to protect women and girls.” she said.

The British media also collects statistical data for 2014, which indicates that one in 4 Nigerians was a victim of rape as a child; 70% of them suffered more than one abuse.
