In the least surprising news since last week\u2019s primaries, Democrats have pulled out their industrial power-washers to try to scrub every trace of ultra-progressivism off their latest hope to retake Texas: Senate candidate James Talarico. But it\u2019ll take a lot more than a routine cleaning to make the 36-year-old radical palatable to the general public.<\/p>\n

\"Talarico<\/p>\n

Running to the middle only works without a record. And Talarico\u2019s, his opponent is\u00a0already<\/a>\u00a0proving, cannot be bleached.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a perfect world, the former middle school English teacher would have taken\u00a0James Carville<\/a>\u2019s advice on political extremism: \u201cDon\u2019t run on it, don\u2019t talk about it, just do it\u201d once you\u2019re in power. But Talarico did talk about it. And talk about. And talk about it \u2014 \u201crighteously babbling ultra-woke slop<\/a>\u201d for\u00a0years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now that it\u2019s primetime, the self-described \u201cdevout Christian<\/a>\u201d is trying to walk back some of his comments that scream unhinged heretic. Things like \u201cGod is non-binary<\/a>.\u201d \u201cThere are many more than two biological sexes. In fact, there are six<\/a>.\u201d White people are \u201cspreading the virus of racism<\/a>. We don\u2019t have to be showing symptoms \u2014 like a white hood or a Confederate flag \u2014 to be contagious.\u201d \u201cThe American flag is a complicated symbol for most of us<\/a>.\u201d \u201cIt is now existential that we try to reduce our meat consumption<\/a>.\u201d \u201cThe Bible is silent on abortion<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t the positions of your garden-variety moderate. Talarico has\u00a0ranted<\/a>\u00a0against the existence of Christian schools,\u00a0protested<\/a>\u00a0the Ten Commandments in classrooms,\u00a0argued<\/a>\u00a0that Jesus was a feminist,\u00a0declared<\/a>\u00a0himself the first \u201cnon-meat campaign,\u201d\u00a0bragged<\/a>\u00a0about being the first state representative\u2019s office to add pronouns to staffers\u2019 business cards, and\u00a0called<\/a>\u00a0men in girls\u2019 sports a \u201cfar-right conspiracy.\u201d <\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a fringe opinion, he\u2019s held it.<\/p>\n

Twenty-four hours after he became the nominee, the young candidate was on an \u201cI didn\u2019t mean it!\u201d tour, expressing sudden contrition for his outrageous remarks. Asked on CBS what he meant when he said \u201cGod is non-binary,\u201d Talarico\u00a0replied<\/a>, \u201cI was being intentionally provocative with that statement, but what it means is that God can\u2019t be defined by human categories. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, says that in Christ there is neither male nor female.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, Ed O\u2019Keefe pressed, does Talarico regret \u201ctalking about God that way?\u201d The Presbyterian seminarian (whose classes are currently on hold) said, \u201cThere are some statements that I\u2019ve made that I certainly regret. There are statements that I\u2019ve made where I\u2019ve missed the mark. I\u2019ll be the first to admit that, but Ken Paxton is intentionally clipping my cringy comments\u2026\u201d he tried to explain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you still believe there are six biological sexes?\u201d O\u2019Keefe wanted to know. Talarico answered, \u201cI know there are two sexes, men and women. I also know there\u2019s a very small percentage of people who have these chromosomal abnormalities, and I believe they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unlike Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger (D), who ran as a centrist mom and now governs like a rabid leftist, Talarico is in Texas, which, despite Democrats\u2019 legitimate inroads, isn\u2019t a purple state. \u201cAbout 67% of Texas adults<\/a>\u00a0identify as Christian, including large evangelical and Catholic communities,\u201d according to Pew Research Center. \u201cThat\u2019s going to be a problem in Texas, and it\u2019s going to be a problem for a lot of Christian voters, whether you\u2019re a Latino, black, or white, they don\u2019t agree with that interpretation of the faith and of Christianity,\u201d CNN political analyst Nia-Malika Henderson acknowledged. \u201cHe\u2019s a vulnerable candidate in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

FRC Action Director Matt Carpenter agreed, telling The Washington Stand, \u201cTalarico is attempting to run the same play Abigail Spanberger ran in Virginia last year. After demonstrating your progressive bona fides in the primary, recalibrate to a moderate message for the general election in the hopes of winning enough votes from the center to win, and then govern as a progressive. It\u2019s a well-worn path for progressive candidates, and a cynical one at that,\u201d he underscored.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately for Talarico, he will have a very difficult time doing so because, although Texas is trending toward becoming more competitive than it has been historically, it is not nearly as liberal as Virginia,\u201d Carpenter reminded people, \u201cand he has an extensive record of statements affirming the most progressive stance on issues like performing gender transition procedures on minors, medicating them for life and often sterilizing them, defunding pro-life initiatives and consistently supporting abortion, which places him diametrically opposite the majority of Texas voters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man who said the thing he loves most apart from his family is \u201ctrans kids<\/a>\u201d will have a tough time connecting to Lone Star families \u2014 but he is trying. Hours after the primaries, he took a stab at outreach to the disappointed Republicans who voted for incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas). \u201cYou have a place in our campaign,\u201d he said to the voters who might not be thrilled with GOP candidate and current state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a legislative record that I think has a lot to offer supporters of Senator Cornyn. Ken Paxton has a criminal record. I have a legislative record,\u201d Talarico\u00a0insisted<\/a>\u00a0to Politico, adding that during his time in the state legislature, he\u2019s worked with Republicans on things like taxes and teachers\u2019 pay. \u201cI\u2019ve called out the extremes in both parties, on the Right and Left, and as you know, called out President Biden for failing to secure our southern border. I\u2019ve pushed back against national Democrats who want to hurt the Texas oil and gas industry, and so I think that Texans are looking for a senator who is going to be independent, who\u2019s not going to serve a political party, not going to serve any special interests or megadonors, but who\u2019s going to serve people of Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

But bridge-building doesn\u2019t work if you don\u2019t have any materials. Talarico claims Cornyn voters have a place in his camp, but do they really? Has he backed off his extremist views in any substantive ways \u2014 or is he just trusting that skeptical voters will believe his sudden and convenient transformation?<\/p>\n

\u201cMercifully,\u201d the editors at National Review\u00a0write<\/a>, \u201cthere is not one American in ten thousand who talks like this, or who has ever talked like this. In Texas, that number is lower still. Such sentiments are bizarre,\u201d they warn, \u201cand indicative of a polluted mind.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

To win this job, Democrats need an excellent actor. Spanberger\u2019s performance was Oscar-worthy, but then, she didn\u2019t have a feature film\u2019s worth of lunacy following her around. And while the party has been exceptionally good at lying and fundraising, eventually voters will take you at your word. In Talarico\u2019s case, there are plenty.\u00a0<\/p>\n
