<\/p>\nConservative media focuses heavily on California Democrats, and for good reason. They have transformed the Golden State into a laboratory for progressive policies that are now spreading across the nation. Yet almost nothing is said about California Republicans.<\/p>\n

Culturally and spiritually, conservative holdouts in California are not so different from their brothers and sisters in the Midwest, the South, or anywhere else in America. We worship in similar churches, raise families with the same biblical convictions, and grieve the policies that tear at the moral and spiritual fabric of our nation. Many Americans might be surprised to learn that California still has the highest raw number of registered Republicans in the nation\u2014a fact my friends in Texas would prefer I ignore.<\/p>\n
Yet raw numbers mean little when power is so one-sided. The far left controls political power in Sacramento, often silencing conservative voices regardless of how many reside here. This dynamic is no longer unique to California. It serves as a sobering microcosm for the broader American experiment: a nation where conservative voters remain numerous, yet too many of their elected representatives shrink from the fight.<\/p>\n
One would expect that any Republican willing to run for office in such hostile territory would carry an extra measure of boldness. One might even think that conservative legislators in California would feel a mandate to speak up for their faithful remnant and stand as salt and light in a darkening culture. The reality, however, indicates a troubling pattern of silence that echoes far beyond California\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n
Just this week, the California Assembly advanced legislation designating Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, two major Muslim holidays, as official state holidays, including provisions for public schools to close in observance. The vote was lopsided. Republican Assemblyman Carl DeMaio stood alone in opposition. Several other Republicans joined Democrats in support, while most simply abstained.<\/p>\n
For Christians, this is not merely a matter of classroom attendance. It represents another incremental shift in a culture that increasingly elevates one faith\u2019s observances while marginalizing the Judeo-Christian foundations that built the West. As Muslim political influence grows nationwide, such accommodations raise deeper questions about equity, religious liberty, and the preservation of America\u2019s historic spiritual heritage. Yet the larger failure lies not in debating the policy, but in the unwillingness of many professed conservatives to engage in the debate at all.<\/p>\n
California, and the nation, desperately need Joshuas: courageous leaders of conviction, even when the land is ruled by political giants. Instead, we too often get the fearful spies sent to scout the Promised Land. They see the problems clearly in private. They may even gripe among friends. But when the moment comes to stand publicly before the people and the opposition, our leaders choose timidity. They abstain. They calculate the political risk to their next election and choose self-preservation over principle, disenfranchising their own base and accelerating a stark cultural surrender in the process.<\/p>\n
This spirit of fearful accommodation is not confined to one state. Across the country, many Republican officeholders in blue cities and purple suburbs mirror California\u2019s caution. They manage decline rather than challenge it. They prioritize institutional survival over biblical fidelity on issues ranging from the sanctity of life and parental rights in education to the protection of religious liberty. Many treat politics as a career instead of a calling, and we reward them for doing so.<\/p>\n
When will true champions arise? And when will we, as conservative voters, honor their boldness?<\/p>\n
In Los Angeles, outsider Spencer Pratt is mounting a surprisingly strong challenge for mayor, channeling voter frustration into a call for competence and accountability.<\/p>\n
Sadly, isolated examples are not enough. The American conservative movement ought to be rooted in the conviction that we are made in the image of God, entrusted with the stewardship of truth and justice. This requires a generation of Joshuas who refuse to cower\u2014leaders who understand that silence in the face of moral erosion is complicity. It requires leaders willing to lose an election for the sake of conscience, knowing that \u201cthe fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.\u201d And it requires voters who refuse to empower placeholder politicians.<\/p>\n
California\u2019s struggles are America\u2019s preview. If we continue rewarding timid spies over courageous witnesses, we will continue to see our spiritual foundations erode. A morally strong America is still attainable. The question for our time is whether enough of our elected representatives will finally rise to the moment, or whether we will watch our inheritance slip away through a thousand quiet abstentions.<\/p>\n
Joshua was destined to conquer even as the rest of his generation, save Caleb, was destined to die before they reached their promised land. The choice before Christian conservatives, in California and across the nation, remains the same today. Will our leaders stand up? And will we choose to vote for conviction?
