Khalaf, 35, was dragged in her vehicle, maybe raped and finally stoned to death on the street.

According to a statement from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), another 9 people were killed.

“This is clear evidence that the Turkish state continues its criminal policy towards unarmed civilians,” said the SDF.

However, Syrian rebels denied responsibility for the ambush.

The Reuters agency asked about the accusation to the spokesman of the National Army backed by Turkey; He said they had not come as far as the highway known as M4.

Khalaf previously expressed concern about the Turkish military operation.

“The Turkish attempt to occupy this land to defend the Turkish people does not fit reality,” he said during a press conference in the city of Qamishli on October 5.

War crime

On Twitter, Brett McGurk, the former special presidential envoy of the Global Coalition to Counteract ISIL, spoke of Khalaf’s efforts to foster tolerance in Syria and condemned his death as a “war crime.”

“The media backed by the Turkish state praise a” successful operation “to” neutralize “a 35-year-old unarmed woman who works to unite Arabs, Christians and Kurds in northeastern Syria. Ms. Hevrin Khalef was reportedly dragged from a vehicle and shot dead. That is a war crime, ”he tweeted.

Publications on social networks verified the initial report, along with the execution of nine other civilians throughout Tal Abyad; this according to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights.

The murders were captured on video and disseminated on social networks.

The threat to religious freedom

Travis Weber, vice president of government policy and affairs Family Research Council, told The Christian Post in a statement that protecting northeastern Syria against Turkish threats is of interest to the United States.

A Turkish military operation in northeastern Syria would not only “expose and betray friends and allies of the United States” but also “lead to the death and displacement of thousands of religious minorities who have found religious protection and freedom under the Democratic Forces Syria and the Autonomous Administration of northern and eastern Syria «.

“This destabilization could also trigger the resurgence of ISIS and allow Iran to expand its influence in Syria, which in turn threatens Israel and our allies in the Gulf region,” Weber said.

“Our withdrawal will not only destabilize the region but will send a wrong message to our allies and will indicate to the world that we don’t care about the religious freedom they have built.”

Tony Perkins, who is in charge of the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom, also expressed concern and said that “An invasion of Turkey in northeastern Syria would pose a serious threat to Kurds and Christians in the region, putting danger the prospects of true religious freedom in the Middle East, ”he wrote in a tweet.

Pat Robertson, the founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network, said he was “horrified” by Trump’s decision; and that “The president of the United States is in great danger of losing the mandate of heaven if he allows this to happen.”
