Rescue workers scout through the rubble in a search with lighting to find more people buried in a school in Mexico City, one of hundreds of buildings destroyed by the country’s deadliest earthquake, causing dozens of missing children.

Shock magnitude 7.1 has so far killed 217 people, nearly half of them in the capital, 32 years since the day after the devastating earthquake in 1985.

Among the concrete and the ruined steel in Enrique Rebsamen School, soldiers and firefighters found at least 22 children dead and two adults, while another 30 children and 12 adults were missing, said President Enrique Pena Nieto.

There were chaotic scenes in school, many parents cling to the hope that their children have survived.

Survivors were found near midnight when volunteer rescue teams formed after the 1985 earthquake and known as ‘moles’ crawled deep under debris.

The television network Televisa reported that 15 more bodies, mostly children, have been recovered, while 11 children were rescued. The school is for children from 3 to 14 years old.

The earthquake toppled dozens of buildings, severed gas pipes and set off fires throughout the city and other cities in central Mexico. The fall of debris and fences has crushed dozens of vehicles.
