Nurse tests positive for Covid-19 after being vaccinated against the virus

A nurse who works in the emergency services of the city of California, San Diego, has tested positive for Covid-19 a few days after being vaccinated, according to the US media.

Matthew W., the 45-year-old nurse, received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on December 18.

He admitted to ABC News affiliate KGTV that the only side effect he suffered after being inoculated with the vaccine was arm pain.

But six days later, after a shift in the emergency unit in the health center with patients infected with Covid-19, he felt chills, muscle pain and fatigue. A test at the hospital confirmed that he was positive for SARS-CoV-2.

According to experts, this case is not “something unexpected”, since vaccinated patients do not develop a definitive defense against the coronavirus immediately after receiving the drug.

Medical studies have shown that this protection, which would reach 95% of those vaccinated, can be achieved days after receiving a second dose of the preparation, which, in the case of Pzifer, takes about 21 days to be inoculated again.

On the other hand, as the incubation period for the coronavirus can be up to 14 days, it is also possible that the nurse was infected before receiving the vaccine on December 18.

These cases are just a reminder that vaccines are not the solution. Stopping the pandemic will take time and that, in the meantime, it is necessary to keep social distancing, washing hands frequently and wearing face masks.
