Movie star Will Smith has given an inspirational speech about the power of fear, and how we should be motivated to overcome it in order to experience all that God has for us in life. “If there was one concept that I would suggest to people to take a daily confrontation with: it’s fear,” he says. “The problem with fear is that it lies.”
Will talks of when he went skydiving, and how this experience meant he had to face his fears head-on. He stayed awake the night before, worrying about the experience he was going to have the next day. Fear engulfed him throughout the lead-up, until the moment that he jumped. “The guy walks you up to the edge. And you’re standing and your toes are on the edge, and you’re looking out down to DEATH. And they say 1,2, and he pushes you on 2 because people grab the side on 3.
But, as Will explains, it is only when you let go that you experience true freedom and peace. “And you fall out of the aeroplane, and in one second you realize that it is the most blissful experience of your life, you’re flying! There is zero fear! You realize that at the point of maximum danger, is the point of minimum fear. It’s bliss!” he says.
“The lesson for me was, why were you scared in your bed the night before? Why were you scared in the car? Why could you not enjoy breakfast?”
“Everything up to the actual stepping out, there is no reason to be scared. It only ruins your day! And then in that moment, when you should be terrified, it is the most blissful experience of your life. God placed the best things in life on the other side of terror.”
