Iraqi authorities recovered the material Tuesday night, following the arrest of the alleged ISIS member in the northern governorate of Nineveh.

Mosul police chief Laith Al Hamdani said in a statement that “the man hid the books in his kitchen.”

32 archaeological books were found in the Bab Al Jadid district of Mosul’s old city, Al Hamdani said.

“The incidentally found manuscripts are only the tip of the iceberg, while hundreds of other artifacts and manuscripts are still missing, destroyed, looted or probably burned,” says Harry Istepanian, who served in Iraq.

On the other hand, a Christian leader of the region assured that “these are the treasures and heritage of the Syrian-speaking Christians of Mesopotamia, a great blessing for having survived this evil.”

In 2017, Mosul was liberated after an international military alliance defeated the ISIS force in a hard and bloody battle that lasted about nine months.
