Abuses by the authorities are testified to when new believers refuse to abandon their faith to return to Islam.

“The penal code states that all Moroccans are Muslims, so those who convert to Christianity face legal problems,” said Jawad Elhamidy, president of the Moroccan Association for Religious Rights and Freedoms.

Those arrested are not the only ones who suffer the consequences, as their relatives are also arrested, those accused of blasphemy face imprisonment for several days.

“If a Moroccan enters a church, one of two things can happen: a policeman sitting in front of the church arrests him or the cleric in charge of the church asks the person to leave, unless the purpose is tourism,” Elhamidy explained.

According to estimates, about 4,000 Christians live in areas far from the capital and attend churches “at home”; they are categorized as “foreigners” because the only belief that is legal is Judaism.

For fear of being repressed, believers avoid meeting periodically in churches- Although that number of believers is known, it is estimated that the actual deaths of believers is much higher.
