Wuhan reported 5 new cases of Covid-19 on Monday, all in the same residential complex.

In recent weeks China has relaxed restrictions on the population to control the spread of the virus and cases have been declining.

The small focus in Wuhan is the first to emerge since the end of the city’s strict confinement on April 8.

One of the five cases reported on Monday involved the wife of an 89-year-old man whose infection was the first confirmed in the city in more than a month on Sunday.

The remaining cases had previously been classified as asymptomatic, meaning that they had tested positive but showed no clinical signs such as cough or fever.

These people can transmit the virus even if they are not sick, however, China does not count asymptomatic cases in its official record of confirmed infections until they show symptoms.

Hundreds of asymptomatic cases are being monitored by health authorities in Wuhan.

11 new cases in Shulan, bordering Russia and North Korea

Meanwhile, over the weekend, in the town of Shulan in Jilin province, near the borders with Russia and North Korea, 11 new cases were reported. A day later, the city declared martial law and went into quarantine, with the government ordering the temporary closure of all public facilities, according to the Global Times.

Shulan has been elevated to a high-risk level, the only city in the country with that designation.

All residents have been instructed to stay home, only one member of each household is allowed to go out each day to buy essentials. All public transportation has been suspended and taxis are not allowed to leave town.

Other cities on alert

Jilin, the neighbouring city, was also elevated from low to medium risk after two new cases were detected, it is feared that the entire province could be at risk.

Other cities in the province are in a high state of alert. The nearby city of Changchun and Dongfeng County warn that anyone returning from Shulan should be quarantined for 14 days. Rail services to several of the cities have also been suspended.

The neighboring province of Liaoning reported a new case on Sunday, a 23-year-old who had recently arrived from Jilin.

All of the infections were linked to a 45-year-old washerwoman who works in a public safety office. She then infected her husband, three sisters and other family members.

However, it is not known how the woman became infected. Reports indicate that she had not travelled outside the province and there is no known contact with anyone known to have been exposed to the virus. A total of 276 of her close contacts have been quarantined, according to China Daily.

But the province’s geographical location may have played a role as it borders North Korea and Russia.

But this Monday, too, China reported 17 new cases nationwide, the highest daily record since April 28, bringing the total number of cases to 82,918, with a death toll of 4,633.

Health experts have warned that as individual countries emerge from containment measures and people begin to move more freely, infections are likely to increase.
